Spark Nearing Zoosk Close, Sets EBITDA Target

SEEKING ALPHA - June 19 - Spark Networks targets adjusted EBITDA of $50M in 2020. The company says the California Department of Business Oversight granted a permit allowing Spark to issue securities in exchange for the outstanding Zoosk securities. The permit followed a hearing that was the last major milestone in the Zoosk purchase. The acquisition is expected to close on July 1. Spark shares are up 2% to $10.80.

Growlr: What the New Owners Have in Store for the App?

GAYSTAR NEWS - June 21 - Gay entrepreneur Coley Cummiskey launched men's dating app Growlr in 2010 in Columbus, Ohio. In March, it was revealed he'd sold it in a $12M deal to tech company, The Meet Group. The app says it has 10M members and ~200K daily users. Growlr is aimed very much at the 'bears' market – men who are bigger, hairer and heftier, plus their admirers. TMG is a publicly owned business headquartered in New Hope, Pennsylvania. TMG was founded in 2005 as MyYearbook, but has grown and changed its name in the intervening years. It was founded by current CEO, Geoff Cook with his siblings, Catherine and Dave Cook, and specializes in dating apps. Its other brands include MeetMe, LOVOO, Skout and Tagged. They launched live streaming on MeetMe in April 2017, and have now embedded it into LOVOO, Tagged and Skout. "What we saw with Growlr was a very active, and a pretty sizeable community sending many millions of messages every single day. We saw the potential to roll out live streaming video into that community," said Mr Cook. One thing that won't change is the app's focus. The team realize that's its strength. Growlr does have a very distinct sense of community. Its users are very loyal and very engaged.

Peruvian Dating App Mi Media Manzana Ceases Operations

CONTXTO.COM - June 19 - Mi Media Manzana, the Peruvian online dating startup turned the lights off and exited countries where it was operating including Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Peru. After six years of operations, the company will be formally over on June 20. Although Mi Media Manzana was the first Peruvian startup to raise venture capital funds ($2M in four different funding rounds), money still ran out. Liquidity issues, in addition to very low user-retention rates, were the main causes for the demise. "We ran out of cash before reaching our break-even point," said CEO Pedro Neira. In total, Mi Media Manzana managed to acquire 2.5M users during its six years of operation. At one point it was also Latin America's most downloaded Google Play dating app. The startup's main mission was to help singles find a true, meaningful relationship.

Match.com & Tinder's Privacy Red Flags

THREATPOST - June 21 - Analysts at ProPrivacy.com say the dating apps collect everything from chat content to financial data on their users - and then they share it. Match.com reserves the right to collect much more information than just the typical demographic breakdown of gender, age and relationship status. This is ostensibly to be able to build a thorough online profile to help find "matches"; but as a result, users will share highly personal and emotional data with the platform. Tinder highlights that it collects chat data. "Of course we also process your chats with other users as well as the content you publish, as part of the operation of the services," Tinder's privacy policy states. Match.com said in its policy that it shares basic demographic as well as "personal information" with "third parties that assist us with various tasks, including data hosting and maintenance, analytics, customer care, marketing, advertising, payment processing and security operations."

Tinder Co-founder's Lawsuit Against Tinder Parent Company Moves Closer to a Trial

THE VERGE - June 14 - The judge rejects IAC / Match Group's motion to dismiss Sean Rad's case, allowing Rad and his co-plaintiffs to pursue their allegations that Match Group and IAC purposely undervalued Tinder in an effort to avoid paying out billions of dollars in stock options to the original dating app team. It's still unclear whether former plaintiffs like Rosette Pambakian, who alleged sexual misconduct on the part of IAC executives, will be able to participate in the lawsuit. She and three other plaintiffs withdrew from the lawsuit over an arbitration clause, but "without prejudice," which means that they could theoretically rejoin.

Gay Dating App Chappy Launches New Friend Finder Mode

GAYTIMES - June 21 - Chappy has launched a new feature called Friend Mode for users to meet friends, to mentor or be mentored. Just like in Date Mode, users must both swipe right on each other to initiate a conversation.

Tinder's Data Sharing Endangers Russian LGBTQ Community

USA TODAY - June 14 - This month, Russia's telecoms regulator, the Roskomnadzor, added Tinder to a list of websites and apps that it forces to store user data, messages and pictures on government-accessible Russian servers. The agency can then offer that data up to law enforcement and intelligence services on demand. If Tinder agrees to provide this information, its users in Russia will have no meaningful sense of privacy on the app. This data collection policy puts Tinder's commitments in conflict. On one hand, users agree to a privacy policy that states that Tinder can share their information to "comply with a legal process." On the other, the company has a commitment to its users and stakeholders. Its privacy web page directly says Tinder does not "compromise with your privacy." Sharing data with the Russian government would seriously endanger Tinder's LGBTQ user base. In 2013, the federal government in Moscow passed legislation broadly banning gay "propaganda" directed at minors. In practice, this law has shut down LGBTQ health education and support services, contributed to a rise in homophobic violence and silenced LGBTQ rights organizations.

Bumble Unveils Second Campaign for 'Find Them on Bumble Bizz' Series

EXCHANGE4MEDIA - June 18 - The campaign features Bumble Global Advisor Priyanka Chopra Jonas along with 25 others Indian women with inspiring stories of personal and professional success. The goal of the campaign is to not only underline success stories, but also generate awareness about the Bumble Bizz community where 'making the first move' could potentially introduce a user to a mentor, a new client or a job opportunity.
