Tinder Is Launching the 'Swipe Surge'
WIRED - Nov 15 - Tinder is testing a new feature called Swipe Surge, which sends a push notification when usage is spiking in a specific geographic area. During those periods, Tinder says the odds of finding a match are increased. Swipe Surges are triggered by a number of variables, including when activity in an area is two times normal averages. Users in cities where Swipe Surge is being tested can expect to receive around one notification a week. Tinder says surges tend to occur on Monday nights, though they can happen at any time. A surge might happen in response to a local event, like a music festival or conference. The company also says that in some cities, like New York, surges may happen later at night than elsewhere.

Gay Dating App Chappy Hires New Managing Director
GAY STAR BUSINESS - Nov 18 - Back in September, gay dating app Chappy relaunched. The sibling app of Bumble, where women must make the first move, Chappy hopes to empower gay men in a similar way. With the relaunch, users can specify the type of relationship they're looking for. Adam Cohen-Aslatei has recently became Chappy's new Managing Director. "Our industry tends to have few gay leaders in top positions, and that's one reason I am so honored to be in this role," he said. 'We believe everyone in our community deserves a better way to meet new people and build relationships,' Cohen-Aslatei states of Chappy's goals. 'We also solve some of the most frustrating gay dating pain point. Endless torso scrolling is dead. All of our profile pictures feature a face and a name. Our bios are descriptive and we have a zero tolerance for hate and discrimination. All Chappy members sign a pledge to treat people with kindness and respect. Also, all profiles are verified.'

Tinder Has a Secret 'Desirability Ranking'
THETAB.COM - Nov 20 - Tinder's algorithm uses its very own "desirability" ranking, called an "Elo ranking" which pairs people. Every user has a rating on Tinder, and they can only swipe through people of a similar rating. If users have low ranking, they'll see people with low rankings too. The rating is technically not a measure of attractiveness, but a measure of "desirability," according to Sean Rad, founder and former CEO of Tinder. "It's not just how many people swipe right on you," he said. "It's very complicated. It took us two and a half months just to build the algorithm because a lot of factors go into it."

Lessons from David Vermeulen, Founder of The Inner Circle
REAL BUSINESS - Nov 22 - The Inner Circle launched in the UK in 2013, had €4.9M in revenue in 2017 and employs 12 people. The crux of Vermeulen's business idea came from personal experience, Vermeulen was looking for love himself. Living in London in 2012, he was trying all the different apps the internet had to offer. But they were high on user traffic, but low on quality user experience. "The bad dates were a catalyst for me. With The Inner Circle, I wanted the focus to be on good quality people meeting on a good quality platform." The website took traction in Amsterdam first, and then London. "But the game changer came a year later when launching the app itself," says Vermeulen. "Tinder became a little like MacDonald's. It's addictive and you want more, but as soon as you consume it, you feel sick." "We achieved a €8k turnover during our first month. By our second, it was €23k." There was huge pressure for Vermeulen to manage this growth effectively. With every launch in every city you make a lot of mistakes, and initially, we were launching across many cities at once, so we made a lot of mistakes. "We took a step back and took it city by city," says Vermeulen. As we stand, in late 2018, the demand for what The Inner Circle offers daters shows no signs of slowing. There are ~1.2M people on the waiting list. But what Vermeulen is most proud of is the wall of baby photos that are sent by couples who met on his app.
