TECH CRUNCH - Feb 11 - Bumble is launching its own version of Tinder's "Boost" feature - "Spotlight". It allows users to pay to bump their profile up to the front of the queue, in order to be seen by more people than they would otherwise. To use Spotlight, Bumble users must pay 2 Coins (bought through a separate in-app purchase). 1 coin is $0.99 in the U.S., or Ł1.99 in the U.K. Spotlight will then show their profile to more users for the next 30 minutes.

Jaumo, the 40M Users Dating App, Operates as a Lean, Bootstrapped Company

GRUENDERSZENE - Feb 13 - Almost every third German over 16 has ever used a dating service, according to a survey by Bitkom. Jens Kammerer and Benjamin Roth founded a social network (Kwick) 20 years ago. Now they run Jaumo, a dating app with 40M users - without VC-money and office. The app, which was launched in 2011, generated annual profit of ~1M Eur in 2017, and claims ~40M users in 180 countries, including ~2.7M in Germany. The app sees 130K - 170K new registrations a day. The company now employs 24 people but still doesn't have an office. "Every Friday we have a video call and discuss how the week went. In addition, we have a virtual coffee talk twice a month where we talk about private things. Once a year, we organize a meetup. Last time we were in Dubrovnik," says Jens Kammerer.

Delta - India's Homegrown LGBTQIA-Friendly Dating App

YOUR STORY - Feb 14 - On September 6, 2018, the Supreme Court of India ruled that Section 377 does not apply to consensual homosexual sex, decriminalising homosexuality. The archaic law from the Indian Penal Code, imposed by the British in 1861, was finally taken down after decades of battle by activists and advocates of the LGBTQIA+ community. Ishaan Sethi, the founder of India's first homegrown dating app for the LGBTQIA+ community, recalls, "It was the highlight of my life." Delta launched in April 2018. Almost 80% of its growth is organic, says the founder. At present, there are ~65K active users on the platform. It is seed-funded by Shunwei Capital, Co-founder of TrulyMadly.com Sachin Bhatia, and HNIs such as such as Keshav Suri and Ritu Dalmia. Currently, Ishaan is in talks for Series A funding round. For 2019, Delta is looking to building its tech team and addressing the needs of the non-urban queer population with localised features such as language options, since almost 50% of users are from small
cities and towns. Delta is not just a dating app. It offers three main services - Connect, Network, and Community.

Peruvian Startup, Mi Media Manzana, Conquering the LATAM Online Dating Market

CONTXTO - Feb 15 - Mi Media Manzana was founded in Lima, Peru by Pedro Neira (CEO) and César Hoshi (COO) back in 2014. They now have operations across Latin America. The startup developed an algorithm that matches people based on compatibility, thus recommending people with similar interests and personalities. Colombia represents 40% of the app's downloads while Peru, Chile and Mexico represent 30, 10 and 10%, respectively. The rest of their users are well spread across Argentina, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, among other places. Latin America is well-known for its romantic culture, but the online dating was once a highly stigmatized industry. Taboos around these products are still very noticeable among the population. Latin America's perception changed only a few years back when Tinder entered the market in 2017. Latin America's population is huge, and online dating has yet to reach its peak.

Tinder and Grindr Failing to Enforce Age Restrictions

DAILYMAIL.CO.UK - Feb 11 - Dozens of children as young as eight have been sexually abused by paedophiles on apps like Tinder and Grindr because they are failing to enforce age restrictions. The figures were revealed by 10 of 46 British police forces. Jeremy Wright, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, described the findings as 'truly shocking'. He added: "I will be writing to these companies asking what measures they have in place to keep children safe from harm, including verifying their age. If I'm not satisfied with their response, I reserve the right to take further action." Tinder said it uses both automated and manual tools to moderate users, including scanning profiles for 'red flag' images, and said it also depends on users to report profiles that may belong to a minor.

40% of American Couples Meet Online

QZ - Feb 12 - Some 39% of heterosexual couples that got together in the US in 2017 met online, according to a recently released study by sociologists Michael Rosenfeld and Sonia Hausen of Stanford University and Reuben Thomas of Arizona State University. This was also the case for more than 60% of same-sex couples that year. That makes online dating by far the most common way that American couples now meet. The data also show that between 1995 to 2017, meeting through friends saw the largest decline, from 33% to 20%.
