Match.com Acquires FriendScout24

WUV.DE - July 17 - Match.com, which operates in Germany under Neu.de, has bought FriendScout24 from Scout24 Holding. The investment firm Hellman & Friedman, which is the majority owner of Scout24, wants to focus primarily on their real estate brand ImmoScout24. In November last year, Hellman & Friedman took over 70% of the shares of Scout24 Holding from Deutsche Telekom for 1.5B Eur.

IAC Buys HowAboutWe, But Not HowAboutWe Couples

NY TIMES - July 14 - Match Group has acquired parts of HowAboutWe. The price is unknown, and the deal includes HowAboutWe’s dating and media properties. It does not involve the Couples side of the business. As a result, only a portion of HowAboutWe employees will move to IAC. Other employees will remain with the Couples business, while some have been laid off.

WIRED - July 17 - For dating startups, resistance against IAC is futile. Many of the companies that do come along with a new idea, like HowAboutWe, inevitably fail or surrender to IAC. Zoosk, which filed its S-1 with the SEC earlier this year, is one exception.

eHarmony Is Working On New TV Ads

ADAGE - July 17 - The TV ads are directed by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst. The national push is set to break in August. eHarmony has a strong base with 25-40 year-olds, but it hasn't been as popular with people outside of that age range. eHarmony hopes the funny ads will resonate with its existing audience and appeal to singles of all ages. TV comprises ~80% of eHarmony's $90M annual marketing budget. The commercials are part of a shift in marketing strategy that began in 2012 when Mr. Warren resumed his role as CEO. In 2013, Mr. Warren said its subscriber base grew by 55%, which he attributed in part to his return and improved online marketing efforts.

SILICON VALLEY BUSINESS JOURNAL - July 17 - In the days after a prostitute named Alix Tichelman was arrested for allegedly injecting a fatal dose of heroin into Google executive Forrest Hayes, people flocked to the site where they met, SeekingArrangement.com. Traffic to the site doubled, according to CEO Brandon Wade. "Bad news ends up being good news when it comes to traffic for our website," he said. He also said the site should generate twice the $10M in sales it brought in last year.
