Tawkify: Real Matchmakers Set Users For Blind Dates

LA WEEKLY - Feb 1 - Started in January 2012, Tawkify appeals to any single person who doesn't want to waste hours combing through profiles and messages. Human matchmakers filter for what you like and make each match feel special. The site offers three types of blind dates: the Tawkify, a 15-minute phone call; the Walkify, a 30-minute stroll; and the Mystery Date, a treasure hunt that begins on a street corner and ends with your potential paramour. About ten matchmakers nationwide personally fix up clients, who provide a photo and details about deal-breakers and desires. Tawkify charges $49 for two guaranteed matches per month; $99 for matches and increased scheduling flexibility; and $149 for matches, flexibility and date counseling from your matchmaker.

New Service Lets The Crowd Control The Date

FAST COMPANY - Feb 1 - Lauren McCarthy, an artist and programmer is currently beta-testing Social Turkers. When she meets up with the stranger, she props her iPhone on the table, presses the record button, and begins broadcasting a video and audio stream of the date in real time. The video stream is viewed by the task-rabbits who take part in Amazon's Mechanical Turk, the crowdsourcing service. Throughout the date, the "social Turkers" answered polls, wrote reviews of what they are seeing, and sent text messages to her iPhone suggesting what to say or do next. McCarthy is currently working on an easy-to-use app version.

Online Dating Sites Couple-up To Safeguard Industry Reputation

MARKETING WEEK - Jan 30 - eHarmony, Match.com and MySingleFriend are holding preliminary talks to establish a code of conduct to distance themselves from less reputable operators in the sector. Also involved in the process are Lovestruck and Christian Connection, other online dating brands are also in discussions but have declined to be publicly associated with the talks at present. It is also understood the long-established Association of British Introduction Agencies (ABIA) is also involved in the talks. The ABIA itself has proposed a code of practice for online introduction service providers, which is scheduled to come into effect this year.

Brian Bowman: Facebook Is Primed To Disrupt Online Dating

TECH CRUNCH - Jan 25 - Men and women experience online dating very differently. Men typically send out hundreds of emails hoping someone will respond. Women can receive hundreds of emails a week, but respond to less than 2%. Most dating profiles are static and lack social network updates. For most social discovery startups, there is a significant cold-start problem. Few startups are funded well enough to afford the marketing required to achieve scale. No social dating site has gained meaningful traction: theComplete.me (10K), Yoke (10K), Circl.es (1K), LikeBright (1K), thedatable (200), and atthepool.com have struggled. With Graph Search, can Facebook reinvent dating, drive down the associated stigma? Just because someone’s profile indicates they are single does not mean they are ready for dating. On Facebook, receiving messages from strangers feels creepy. Facebook’s profiles are shallow. The real question may be how important is the dating market to Facebook? It will be a challenge to run so many vertical solutions: dating, recruiting, ratings, reviews, etc. Facebook can easily leverage their massive social graph to enable meaningful friend-of-friend introductions. They can create very detailed, self-updating profiles by displaying and structuring data from Pinterest, Spotify, Pandora, Yelp, Netflix, Amazon, ESPN, GoodReads and more. They can dominate real-time communication: chat, check-ins, poke, texting and Skype video chat.
