Cupid In Legal Fight For French Domain Name

HERALD SCOTLAND - Nov 19 - Cupid has found itself embroiled in a €1M (L800K) legal dispute over the way it has romanced French customers. Cupid has been challenged by continental rival Cupidon over the Scottish company's use of the Cupidon.com domain name it bought 18 months ago for L175,000. The result of the case, which is being heard by the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris, is expected this week. Cupidon, the owner of the Cuipdon.fr, Cupidon.be and Cupidon.net websites, claims its trade mark has been infringed and that Cupid is trading unfairly. Cupidon is seeking €800K in damages over Cupid's use of the Cupidon.com name, €75K on the grounds of unfair competition and €75K for tardiness in responding to Cupidon's request that it stop using the domain as well as assorted costs and daily charges if Cupid does not comply.

Wikimatch logoPR WEB - Nov 13 - Wikimatch.com is a new dating site that launched this week. Software Engineer Jason Barton developed Wikimatch.com to utilize socially collaborative matchmaking, in which people estimate the likelihood of a good match between singles. At OkCupid, Being An Atheist Is A Date-maker

WASHINGTON POST - Nov 14 - In some circles, being an atheist is a strike against you. But at OkCupid, including the word “atheist” in a first message to another user was more likely to garner a reply than any other religious descriptor except Christian. “Mentioning your religion helps you, but, paradoxically, it helps you most if you have no religion,” co-founder Christian Rudder wrote on the site’s blog. OkCupid was founded by Rudder, Sam Yagan, Chris Coyne and Max Krohn. In the 1990s, while still Harvard math majors, they created SparkNotes, a series of study guides that was sold to Barnes and Noble. The four launched OkCupid in 2003, and the site has since attracted ~10M users. Three of the founders describe themselves as nonbelievers in their onsite profiles.

True Love Former Directors Fined $1.5 Million By NSW Court

AAP - Nov 13 - Three "romance robbers" from True Love Corp must pay ~$1.5M for exploiting vulnerable clients and leaving them dateless and destitute. NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe says True Love's conduct was "despicable" and he hopes "other ruthless operators" in the dating game will take note of the landmark decision against them. Zivko Dimitrijevski, the former director and his wife Helen Dimitrijevski, a former manager of TLC, have been ordered to pay compensation of $1,123,095 and banned from working in the introduction industry. Hollie Veall, a former co-director, was ordered to pay $342,050. In most cases the clients were told to upgrade their memberships, at significant cost, to meet more people and have life coaching and grooming services but didn't get anything and it turned out the prospective partners on the databases were largely nonexistent.

Grindr Receives Mixed Reviews

EAST TENNESSEAN - Nov 12 - According to Grindr, since the inception of the app in early 2009, ~1-2K new users have signed up every day. 30% of the app’s users check the app daily, and 44% check their accounts on a weekly basis. The app has caught some flack because some users use it to find short-term relationships or to meet for casual sex. “As a dating tool, its hit or miss,” said one of Grindr's users. “Rarely will you find someone who is looking for Mr. Right rather than Mr. Right Now.” The app announced that it reached 3M users in 192 countries in November 2011. This made Grindr the largest all-male, location-based social network in the world.
