California Updates Dating Services Contract Law
LOS ANGELES TIMES - Oct 8 - Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a law updating the state's Dating Service Contract Act to encompass services like Match.com and eHarmony, an effort to ensure consumers can opt out of services. The state contract law gives the customer the right to cancel by mail, telegram, or delivery within three days of signing up, and states that cancellation is effective when deposited in the mail. But the law was passed in 1989 and had not been updated since. Assembly Bill 314 by Assemblyman Kevin Mullin will allow users to cancel contracts by email and have access to electronic copies of contracts.http://www.onlinepersonalswatch.com/new ... -law-.html
Americans Are More Single Than Ever, New Study Shows
GEARSOFBIZ - Oct 14 - More and more Americans are staying single by choice, with 42% of adults living without a partner, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. That's up from 39% a decade ago. The poll reported the biggest change among adults under 35. Now, 61% of this demographic is flying solo, up from 56% 10 years ago. The study did not address the possible role of Tinder and other online dating apps, in de-emphasizing the need for marriage to ensure companionship.http://www.onlinepersonalswatch.com/new ... shows.html

Why This Sikh Entrepreneur Created A Jewish Dating App
JTA - Oct 11 - KJ Dhaliwal and Sukhmeet Toor, both Sikhs, are behind Dil Mil, described as a "Tinder alternative" for the South Asian community. Since they founded the app in 2015, it has made ~5M matches. They are now launching Shalom, a dating app for the Jewish community. "We saw a lot of similarities in the Jewish and South Asian communities - the values around family and marriage," said Dhaliwal. Shalom and Dil Mil rely on algorithms that suggest matches based on user behavior and data. Users can access Shalom both by the app, as well as through Facebook Messenger. On Facebook, users chat with a bot that asks them questions about themselves and suggests possible matches. Conversing with the bot is counterintuitive at times. For example, users have to follow a specific format when giving their geographic locations.http://www.onlinepersonalswatch.com/new ... g-app.html
First Evidence That Online Dating Is Changing The Nature Of Society
TECHNOLOGY REVIEW - Oct 10 - Dating sites have changed the way couples meet. Now evidence is emerging that this change is influencing interracial marriages and even the stability of marriage itself. Today, online dating is the second most common way for heterosexual couples to meet. For homosexual couples, it is the most popular. Shortly after the introduction of the first dating sites in 1995, like Match.com, the percentage of new marriages created by interracial couples increased rapidly. The increase became steeper in the 2000s, when online dating became even more popular. Then, in 2014, the proportion of interracial marriages jumped again after the creation of Tinder.http://www.onlinepersonalswatch.com/new ... ciety.html

VR Dating Is Here To Stay
THE CONVERSATION - Oct 12 - Facebook has launched a show called Virtually Dating, a version of a blind date using HTC Vive VR technology. Then, for those who are struggling with dating altogether, an app for HTC Vive offers dating lessons. The effect VR dating could have on our social structure is still unknown, but a recent study by researchers at West Virginia University and the University of Illinois looked at first physical date success after initial contact through online dating. In many cases, a decline in attraction occurred after the first face to face date, in spite of previously favourable online interactions. A VR date might be a more intense and personal experience. Moving from screen to VR invokes "presence" – the feeling of actually being in the virtual space itself.http://www.onlinepersonalswatch.com/new ... -stay.html

For Match Group Investors, A Look Beyond Tinder
BARRONS - Oct 12 - Match Group shares rocketed higher on Wednesday, despite an analyst's view that the stock is now priced appropriately. Goldman Sachs analyst Christopher Merwin sees potential in new video features that are set to roll out soon. That said, he thinks that the company's investments could weigh on its profits going forward. Those video features may boost engagement on Match and other legacy dating sites, but they also could boost the company's server costs. Match shares were up 3.6% Wednesday. The stock has jumped ~50% since the start of the year.http://www.onlinepersonalswatch.com/new ... inder.html
Helen Fisher: "The Only True Algorithm Is Your Own Brain"
THE MANEATER - Oct 10 - Psychologist and anthropologist Helen Fisher was a part of the Life Sciences & Society symposium, The Science of Love, in which speakers were sharing research about the biology and chemistry behind love. Fisher worked with match.com in 2005 when she was hired to create chemistry.com, which combined hormone and personality-based matching systems. Romantic love is linked to a sense of attachment that is triggered through the chemicals oxytocin and vasopressin in the brain. This feeling can also be connected to sex drive. Fisher doesn't see dating sites as sites that facilitate dating. They're more like introducing sites, she said. A matching system isn't always right. "The only true algorithm is your own brain," Fisher said.http://www.onlinepersonalswatch.com/new ... brain.html
