Hinge's CEO Says A Good Dating App Doesn't Rely On Algorithms

WASHINGTON POST - Sep 30 - In 2012, Justin McLeod founded Hinge. Initially, the app was very similar to Tinder except that it aimed to pair users with friends of Facebook friends. In 2015, after Nancy Jo Sales's story in Vanity Fair about how Tinder had created a "dating apocalypse" went viral, Hinge nixed its Tinder-like swiping interface and relaunched, calling itself "the relationship app." Part of Hinge's re-branding involved adding profile questions that would allow users to highlight their more authentic selves. "We found that most people don't think some super-special algorithms would be able to find their right person. I don't think we're there yet", he said.

Zhenai.com: Money Still Driver In Politically Incorrect Matchmaking World

SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST - Sep 24 - When it comes to dating, Chinese men are most interested in what women look like, while women want to know about a man's income. Primary-school teachers and nurses are in high demand among men, while women favour men in IT or finance. That's according to Dr Song Li, founder of Zhenai.com, one of China's biggest matchmaking sites. Zhenai.com says it has 120M registered users, and ~50K new users join the dating every day. Zhenai.com offers two services: a "self-service dating service" where members pay 400 yuan ($60) a year to browse members' profiles, chat and arrange dates; the other is a more exclusive offline, face-to-face matchmaking service that costs 4K yuan for six months. Zhenai has 50 matchmaking centres in 37 cities across China, and Li says he expects the company to generate 1.5B yuan in revenue and 200M yuan in net profit this year.

The app has introduced a word detection system on their app. If one of their members tries to use a 'naughty' word when compiling a message to a potential date, their system flags-up the word and encourages the user to write something else instead.

Chrome Plugin Exploited Tinder Privacy Bug

THE NEXT WEB - Sep 28 - Tinder Social got in trouble for outing its users to their Facebook friends. It turns out that, in addition to this, Social had another privacy issue that made it possible for Tinder users to track their Facebook friends – and see their exact location. Tinder made Social an opt-in feature to further protect the privacy of its users, but it clarified that anybody who activates Social will be vulnerable to this loophole. Since then, it has killed off Social altogether.
