What's Next For SNAP Interactive?

OPW - Mar 14 - On todays investor call, CEO Alex Harrington revealed that SNAP is going to be launching a new brand in Q3. We'll cover it here on OPW as soon as its announced. Are You Interested has now rebranded to FirstMet, and the company is seeing a significant increase in activity with the new brand. This is especially pleasing since they've not started their win-back campaign yet. SNAP is looking towards International markets. FirstMet is configured for translation and is live in Spanish. Portuguese is being evaluated. SNAP's product innovation will focus on mobile moving forward. SNAP Interactive generated $12 million revenue in 2015, down 11% from 2014. EBITDA was nearly break-even, which is their best performance to date.

Ask.fm Founders Back Dating App Mint

TECH CRUNCH - Mar 17 - The founders of Ask.fm, the social Q&A app that became embroiled in a cyberbullying media storm before being acquired by IAC, have backed new dating app Mint. Through their startup builder Balaclava Lab, Ilja Terebin, Mark Terebin and Oskar Liepins have invested $1M in the young company. Launched in December, Mint is pitched as a location-based mobile dating app that helps users meet with people nearby.

Shaadi.com Founder Anupam Mittal Mulls Second Innings As Entrepreneur

DEAL STREET ASIA - Mar 17 - "I'm not done yet," said Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal when asked if he was looking at another entrepreneurial venture. Mittal, who is an active angel investor in several startups, started Shaadi.com in 1996 before forming People Group to look at other opportunities in technology space. Early last year, he sold dating app Fropper and property listing portal Makaan.com. In July 2015, he stepped down as CEO of Shaadi.com to focus on global expansion and new areas of business. Mittal feels 2016 will be a good year to invest. He says the current year is likely to see fewer, but larger investments by him.

FINFEED - Mar 15 - DateTix has agreed to sell a non-core consulting business for a possible sale price of $780K, adding cash to its dating app marketing push. The company has recently announced that it had passed 7K downloads.

China Is The Biggest Gay Dating Market

ADVOCATE - Mar 18 - Earlier this year, the Beijing Kunlun Tech Company bought a majority stake in Grindr. Recently, China banned all TV programming depicting gay and lesbian couples. Yet the Chinese business was "excited" to invest $93M in the app. The world's most popular same-sex matchmaking app is Chinese Blued. Blued alone has ~15M users. "People in China are less open about homosexuality, but the beautiful thing about the smartphone is that it's a private device," said Blued investor David Chao.

ABC NEWS - Mar 15 - In the $1B industry, being very specific is becoming the norm. Dating sites are going the extra mile, allowing users to filter data options according to religion, height, body size, and race. However, recent data shows 54% of millennials are dating outside their race. 88% saying they'd be open to it. On WhereWhitePeopleMeet.com, users are not required to check a white racial preference. Nor are they kicked off for not being white. Even though the name would suggest otherwise. The site launched last year and sparked controversy over its billboard that had to be taken down.
