One of the easiest ways to build a social networking community is via a message board.

There are serveral popular open source code free sites out there:

Phorum.org - Uses PHP & MySQL
PHPBB.com - Uses PHP & MySQL
SimpleMachines.org - Uses PHP & MySQL
vBulletin - Uses PHP & MySQL

The software is easy to download and fairly easy to install. The real problem is gaining critical mass and GETTING people to post.

If there are other message board software providers I haven't listed, please feel free to post.
