Brand Capital Invests in Blockchain-powered App 'Ponder' To Launch in India

INDIANWEB2.COM - Dec 30 - Brand Capital, the strategic investment arm of India's largest media conglomerate the Times Group, has acquired a stake in Ponder, a blockchain-based recommendations platform. Founded in 2017 by Manshu Agarwal and Chris Imani, Ponder is a game-like mobile app to play matchmaker where users win money for making successful matches. With a drag and drop photos of friends or other singles that one think would be a good match, users play a matchmakers if singles like each other the user win $10, if they marry they get $1K. The app has been downloaded over 120K times and the startup is now building another referral app for recruitment purposes.

Where Is Facebook Dating?

INDIA TODAY - Dec 25 - Delay in rolling Facebook Dating to other countries could be stemming from the fact that Facebook is taking precautions and making sure that its service follows the laws. Facebook Dating was made available to the 30M FB users in Colombia. Subsequently, its reach was expanded to Canada and Thailand in November. One possible reason why the company is delaying the roll out is because its focus is on mitigating the series of disasters including the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

US Dating Apps Woo Indian Market

FINANCIAL TIMES - Dec 30 - Bumble launched in India earlier this month, with the high-profile backing of Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra. At the same time, Tinder has rolled out new features designed to cement its foothold in the country, where it has been operating since 2015. Happn, which matches app users who have crossed paths in real life, has become one of the most downloaded dating apps since coming to India last year. Yet the companies may find Indians difficult to woo. Homegrown matchmaking services with names such as Shaadi.com and Mumbai-listed Matrimony.com, which went public last year in a $78M listing, flourished in India since long before smartphones. According to Matrimony.com almost nine in 10 marriages in India are arranged. But Matrimony.com's share price has fallen 45% over the past year, and profits in the most-recent quarter fell 30% YOY to $1.9M. The foreign apps have yet to prove that the Indian market can be lucrative. Whitney Wolfe, Bumble's CEO and founder, said: "We're entering with purpose, with mission, with a really nuanced, customised product." Far more men in India use dating apps than women, who often stay away due to safety concerns and stigma. ~85% of Happn's users in India are men. But Bumble argues its women-first brand and safety features mean it is best placed to attract female users. In September, Tinder introduced a tool that also gave Indian women the prerogative to initiate a conversation with a match.

Harmonica: How the Arabic Dating App Aims to Help Egyptians Find a 'Life Partner'

THE NATIONAL.AE - Dec 30 - Harmonica is the only dating platform available in Arabic. "We're overwhelmed with the interest and data we've received," says Harmonica co-founder and CEO Sameh Saleh, 31, who has received 50 confirmed accounts of matches that turned into marriage proposals since the app launched in November 2017. He predicts that the actual number is at least 10 times as high. To join Harmonica, users complete a short questionnaire that resembles a first meeting with a prospective mother-in-law. After filling in a short bio and uploading a couple of pictures, the questions that follow ask users about a their degree, work, income and their religious affiliation. Users can't sign up unless they have an active Facebook account that is at least two years old. Given Harmonica's strong focus on monogamy, users are permitted to view no more than 10 potential matches a day. The plan is to expand the app regionally within the next three years.

The Rise of Right-wing Dating Apps

VOX.COM - Dec 26 - In recent years, a crop of conservative dating startups have launched. Some, like Righter and Conservatives Only, are only for conservatives. Others, like Donald Daters claim they're open to people of all political stripes who are interested in dating Republicans. Bumble has recently introduced a "filtering" feature that lets people weed out matches who don't meet their political, astrological, or lifestyle preferences. Emily Moreno, the founder of Donald Daters, said she once had a date walk out on her after she said she had worked on a Republican Senate campaign. Earlier this year, Politico magazine documented the dating trials of millennial Trump staffers, many of whom claimed that supporting the president makes them outcasts - even in Washington, DC. A 2017 survey by OkCupid found that 74% of its users considered voting for Trump a deal breaker. Donald Daters launched in October and claimed 20K downloads in the first few weeks after launch. Righter takes a different approach than Donald Daters. Righter is "for us, by us," founder Christy Edwards Lawton said. "Us," of course, means conservatives. Lawton said she got the idea for Righter after meeting a "beautiful" woman at a Republican fundraiser in Manhattan whose politics interfered with her dating life.

BUSINESS INSIDER - Dec 25 - Online dating has, one expert suggested, made it easier to leave unhappy relationships. According to Eli Finkel, a psychologist at Northwestern University and a professor at the Kellogg School of Management and the author of "The All-or-Nothing Marriage," there was a time when, if you wanted to meet someone else, you'd have to get dressed up and go to a bar. A few years ago, psychotherapist and relationship expert David Kavanagh was quoted saying something similar in The Independent: Infidelity is hardly new, but dating apps have made it easier for people who are unhappy in their relationships to find someone else.

Users Will Soon Be Able to Gift In-app Purchases

TECH CRUNCH - Dec 20 - Apple will allow iOS users to gift in-app purchases, not just paid apps. This means developers may soon have the tools to allow users to purchase virtual goods or even subscriptions through their app, which can then be gifted to others. It's unclear at this time how the change will be implemented, from the developer's side. It's likely Apple will soon share more information with its developer community to inform them of how to get started.

FAST COMPANY - Dec 19 - "Active is our DNA, feeling good is our purpose," reads the app tagline. Slindir founder Andrea Miller explained the philosophy behind her company, noting that a common lifestyle was the best marker of a relationship's success. The more niche a dating app, the better and faster it helps members find what they're looking for. "Being active affects your vacation, the restaurants you eat at, it's going to affect you," said Miller, later adding, "It really has nothing to do with how you look, it's how it makes you feel." There is no fat-bashing or blatant elitism. Slindir promotes a healthy lifestyle, not a weight requirement. There is a difference.
