Facebook's Lawyers Could Face IP, Trade Secret Challenges
LAW.COM - May 18 - Match Group has been engaged in litigation on multiple fronts lately. Facebook might want to have its in-house lawyers review Match's recent intellectual property lawsuits if the company wants to avoid the potential for litigation in its latest venture. Match filed two lawsuits back in March: one against Bumble, and another similar complaint against Chinese dating app TanTan. Bumble has yet to file a response. Facebook will need to be cautious when hiring any employees from Match to help develop its own platform, attorneys said. Facebook has in fact hired at least 25 employees from popular dating sites in recent years, according to a search on LinkedIn. Two of them were from Bumble and Badoo.

Tinder's Upcoming Location-based Feature Seems A Bit Creepy
TECH CRUNCH - May 15 - Tinder is developing a feature that tracks users location via its app, then shows potential matches where they've been. The idea is to allow people to come across their real-life missed connections, similar to how the dating app Happn works today. This feature will be opt-in. The way Tinder has implemented the location feature is concerning. Instead of allowing users to explicitly "check in" to a given place – like their favorite coffee shop or a cool restaurant or bar – Tinder continuously tracks users' location with its app, then makes a determination about which of their "places" it will show to potential matches. The company, at least, thought to remove things like doctors, dentists, banks, and the place where people live or work from this automated location-sharing option. It also won't add a place to the list until after they've left – though it doesn't say how long it waits to do so.

Zhenai's Founder Sets Sights On Marrying AI To Blockchain
SCMP - May 18 - In November, Li Song sold a controlling stake in his online matchmaking business, Zhenai.com, to PAG Asia Capital, and now he's looking forward to his next big thing. Zhenai, which translates as "true love", was his second venture after MeMeStar, a short message-based chat forum that was sold to the Chinese web portal Sina. Li founded Zhenai in 2005, but it wasn't until 2008 that it started to take off. He attributes the success that followed to the rapid adoption of smartphones. Zhenai.com has ~120M registered users, and new users join the dating platform at a rate of ~50k a day. Li is now a minority shareholder and will remain on the board. He's also taking an online fintech course offered by Oxford University, and when that finishes, plans to start new business related to two key emerging technologies – artificial intelligence and blockchain. He's confident that we will see apps on decentralised platforms in the future.

WARISBORING - May 16 - In 2016, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received ~15k reports of romance scams. According to Zoosk, ~1/4 of profiles that get blocked on suspicion of fraud are attempts at impersonating members of the US Armed Forces so the site is launching a military verification feature, called Insignia, to verify whether or not a user is a member of the US Armed Forces. Zoosk partnered with SheerID, a long-trusted verification company, to provide active duty military and reservists the opportunity to verify that they are legitimate service members.
