Bumble Is Suing Match For $400M For Fraudulently Obtaining Trade Secrets

TECH CRUNCH - Mar 28 - Two weeks ago Match Group sued Bumble for patent infringement and misuse of intellectual property. Bumble has now filing a separate lawsuit accusing Match of multiple improprieties in regards to interactions between the two companies over the past few months. The lawsuit acknowledges that Bumble and Match Group were in acquisition talks over the last 6 months. Bumble alleges that once Match Group found out there were other companies also interested in either investing in or acquiring Bumble, Match Group filed their aforementioned lawsuit to make Bumble less attractive to those other companies. Secondly, Bumble alleges that during the acquisition process Match Group fraudulently requested that Bumble provide "confidential and trade secret information" which Match Group said they "needed to provide a higher offer for Bumble". Bumble alleges that no subsequent offer came, and Match Group instead requested and obtained this information solely for "the financial benefit of its dating app businesses". The lawsuit requests relief in the form of monetary damages, which Bumble estimates at $400M.

Security Flaws In Gay Dating App Grindr Expose Users' Location Data

NBC NEWS - Mar 28 - Grindr suffers from two security issues, according to Trever Faden, CEO of the property management startup Atlas Lane. He created a website called C*ckblocked that allowed users to see who blocked them on Grindr after they entered their Grindr username and password. Once they did so, Faden was able to gain access to a trove of user data that is not publicly available on user profiles, including unread messages, email addresses, deleted photos, and the location data of users, some of whom have opted to not share their locations publicly. Faden also discovered a separate security flaw related to location data that did not require users to log in to any third-party apps or websites with their Grindr credentials. Grindr said it was aware of the vulnerabilities and had changed its system. This is not the first time that issues with Grindr's security around location data has been reported.

Craigslist Drops Dating Ads After New Law

BBC.COM - Mar 23 - Craigslist has closed its dating ads section in the US, in response to a new bill against sex trafficking. The bill states that websites can now be punished for "facilitating" prostitution and sex trafficking. The company said keeping the section open in the US was too much of a risk. In March, US congress passed the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (Fosta). It will apply to all states in the US. Websites are not usually held responsible for the content that members post - as long as illegal material is removed as soon as the service provider is made aware.

Ashley Madison Attempts To Regain The Public's Trust

ENGADGET - Mar 28 - Ashley Madison wants the public to know that it's changed its ways. Ruben Buell, who became CTO at Ruby Life in February 2017 and took the reins as president last April, is looking to regain public trust. According to Buell, there are 191k daily active users and 1.4M new connections made each month. Last year was the first since the hack that Ashley Madison saw "substantial growth" in its user base, Buell said, adding that its 2017 revenue grew 5% globally and 16.7% in the US compared to 2016.

How Raya's $8/Month Dating App Turned Exclusivity Into Trust

TECH CRUNCH - Mar 24 - Raya is less like Tinder and more like a secret society. It costs a flat $7.99 for everyone, women and celebrities included. Launched in March 2015, Raya has purposefully flown under the radar. No interviews. Little info about the founders. In late 2016 it quietly acquired video messaging startup Chime, led by early Facebooker Jared Morgenstern, without anyone noticing. He'd become Raya's first investor a year earlier. The app has reportedly attracted celebrities like DJs Diplo and Skrillex, actors Elijah Wood and Amy Schumer and musicians Demi Lovato and John Mayer, plus scores of Instagram models and tattooed creative directors. Raya users can now see nearby people on a map when GPS says they're at hot spots like bars, dance halls and cafes.

Grindr To Offer H.I.V. Test Reminders

NEW YORK TIMES - Mar 26 - Grindr, which claims to have 3.3M daily users, will send men who opt into the service a reminder every three to six months, and simultaneously point them to the nearest testing site. It will also let clinics, gay community centers and other testing sites advertise for free. "More than 107k gay and bisexual men in this country have H.I.V. but don't know it", said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, chief of AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "And there is typically a three-year gap between the day they get infected and the day they find out."

Hackers Sell Facebook Logins And Other Data On The Dark Web For $5

BRINKWIRE - Mar 25 - A recent report from content marketing agency Fractl has found out just how much users data is worth on the dark web. The price of user privacy has been cast into the spotlight in the wake of Facebook's massive data scandal, which led to 50M users' data being harvested without their knowledge. Facebook logins are sold for $5.20 each. Obtaining someone's Facebook credentials can serve as a gateway into hundreds of other apps they've also granted access. By comparison, the most expensive logins are for PayPal, which can demand up to $247. Login to or POF costs $9.
