China Dating App Momo Goes Ahead With Nasdaq IPO

SCMP - Dec 11 - Allegations of misconduct against a former employee just 40 hours before his new venture Momo went public have created a media backlash against NetEase - China's fifth-largest internet firm by market value. Tang Yan, CEO of mobile dating app Momo, was accused of "acquiring information and technological resources" to establish his own firm in 2011, while still working as the editor-in-chief of NetEase's news portal 163.com the firm alleged on Wednesday. Momo's IPO went ahead as planned on Thursday on Nasdaq, raising $216M. The stock rose 26% during the trading day, ending at $17.02, giving Momo a market capitalisation of $3.17B.

Hinge Raises $12 Million

MASHABLE - Dec 11 - Mobile startup Hinge has raised $12M in Series A funding. Hinge had previously brought in $8.6M in seed funding and convertible notes. Shasta Ventures led the round, along with previous investors including Lowercase, Great Oaks, Eniac and CAA ventures. The funding will be used to bring the app into more markets. Hinge is currently available in 28 cities, 24 of which were launched in 2014. The company recently brought in former Spotify employee Eric Bogs to heads up its engineering team.

Happn Attracts $8 Million To Roll Out Its Tinder-Like App Globally

TECH CRUNCH - Dec 11 - French dating app Happn just raised an $8M Series A round from Alven Capital and DN Capital, as well as business angels, such as Fabrice Grinda. Happn uses phone’s location to show users potential matches. Happn is now available in Paris, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid and New York. Out of its user base of 1M people, 200K people use Happn every day.

Cupid Investor Ups Stake Ahead Of Disposal Vote

FINANCIAL TIMES - Dec 12 - Richard Griffiths, the former chairman of Evolution Securities, has raised his stake in Cupid to above 10%, as the company nears a crucial vote on December 23 to offload its websites and turn into a shell company. Cupid has proposed to sell its dating websites, including Cupid.com and Uniformdating.com, to Tradax and Together Networks, which are chaired by Max Polyakov.

Badoo's Founder And Whitney Wolfe Started Bumble, Female Friendly "Tinder"

BUSINESS WEEK - Dec 9 - Whitney Wolfe, Tinder's former VP of marketing, launched Bumble which works like Tinder but only women can start conversations. In Sep, Wolfe, Tinder's former VP of marketing, settled a lawsuit that accused CEO Sean Rad and marketing chief Justin Mateen of writing her co-founder status out of the company's history and sending her inappropriate SMS. A week after she filed the claim, Wolfe says she received an e-mail from Andrey Andreev, founder of Badoo, expressing support. They hatched a plan to start a new “female-focused product,” Andreev said in an e-mail.

SecondWife.com: New Matchmaking Site For Muslim Polygamists

OBSERVER - Dec 11 - SecondWife.com is a matchmaking site that enables Muslim men to search for second, third, or fourth wives. On the flip side, women can search SecondWife.com profiles if they hope to become an extra wife. Yusuf Khan launched the UK-based polygamy site three months ago. The site already has ~3K users. The Koran permits men to marry up to four wives, as long as they can support them financially and treat them all equally. A 2008 report by NPR estimated that 50K to 100K American Muslims engage in the practice.

Momo vs. Momo: China’s Tinder Fights For Its Name

WSJ - Dec 9 - Hangzhou Momo Wedding Service sued the better-known Beijing Momo Technology, the one set for a Thursday U.S. IPO , alleging they have exclusive use of the brand for what in China is called the friend-making businesses. The trial will likely take place around the end of December. Beijing Momo was founded in March 2011. Hangzhou Momo had the Momo trademark transferred to it this year from a software business.
