Cupid Buys Uniform Dating For GBP 7 Million

SCOTSMAN - Sep 14 - Cupid Plc has sealed a deal to buy site Uniform Dating for GBP 7M. Cupid will pay GBP 3.6M up front and a further GBP 3.4M depending on Uniform Dating’s performance. Uniform Dating has recently launched in the US, Canada and Australia. The latest takeover follows July’s L2.9M acquisition of French peer Assistance Genie Logiciel, which operates sites including Amour.com. Last year Cupid snapped up a number of Portuguese-language website operators in Brazil.

Grouper Expands To 10 More Cities

HUFFINGTON POST - Sep 13 - Grouper is an online "social club" that launched more than a year ago in New York City. The site expanded to 10 more cities: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia and Seattle. Signing up takes about a minute because the site creates a profile for you by pulling information from your Facebook page. Then you send an email inviting two friends to be your wingmen or wingwomen. Lastly, you answer five questions on a sliding scale. Then you wait two to three weeks for an email from Grouper. There's a waiting list because matches are determined by staff members in addition to a computer algorithm, according to the company. The email sets the location for your meeting and offers various times for you and your friends to choose from. Each of the six people must pay $20, which goes to pay for the first round of drinks and the site's fee. Grouper dates are more enjoyable because when you're with your friends, you're going to behave more comfortably and naturally.

New Online Dating Startups

TECH CRUNCH - Sep 13 - Michael Cafferata, a firefighter, started VideoDate, a mobile video chat app. The entire experience, including filling out your profile, happens on a mobile device. The app will try to match you with other users, and if you and another person are interested in each other, you can do a video chat. You can’t just do a video call with someone who hasn’t approved you. The app is ad supported, but Cafferata says a paid ad-free version will be released later. Frimper is another video app. But instead of a mobile app, the company has gone with a Facebook app. There are two main components: matching algorithms and an online “speed-dating”. The speed-dating component is the catchy part, but Frimper is investing heavily on the algorithm. Frimper’s matching isn’t based just on what you say about yourself, but also about what other Frimper users you interact with say about you. Dateini solves a different problem entirely: What do you do once you’ve already got a date? The company provides a date-planning application described as a virtual concierge service.

Grindr CEO: 100% Of My Audience Does Not Have Equality

MASHABLE - Sep 8 - Grindr is hoping to steer its 1,558,031 U.S. users — all of voting age — toward ballot boxes this year, in what’s bound to be an historic election. Joel Simkhai, founder and CEO of the Los Angeles-based company, believes another fundamental difference sets the userbase apart. “We don’t have the same rights as everyone else. 100% of my audience does not have equality.” He believes Grindr has a responsibility to change that. The team launched the Grindr for Equality: Election 2012 campaign for the first time. The end goal is to rally ~1.5M users together to vote for LGBT-friendly initiatives and their congressional supporters in all 50 states. Grindr hopes to educate users about local elections, and advocate for the president, representatives and senators who are supportive of same-sex marriage and gay-friendly initiatives.
