DISCOVERY NEWS - July 29 - Measures being introduced nationwide seek to make dating sites more transparent, and safe. Connecticut, New York, Florida, Texas, and New Jersey are among states that already have laws requiring dating sites to post safety notices. The Illinois State Senate recently passed legislation requiring dating sites to tell their members whether they perform background checks using government databases. Any site in violation gets fined $50K. Match.com started screening for sex offenders. Match was also one of three companies, along with eHarmony and Spark Networks, that announced this spring they would introduce new safeguards against sexual predators, scammers, and identity thieves. That’s one reason Schechter says he hardly considers HowAboutWe to be an online dating site at all. Getting would-be daters offline is the industry’s No. 1 trend, according to OkCupid co-founder and CEO, Sam Yagan. Online dating sites have become a $1.3 billion industry during the past decade, according to researcher Marketdata Enterprises. EDGE - July 25 - Online Buddies, the parent company of Manhunt.net, has launched an ad agency to help digital marketers reach Manhunt users after they’ve logged off. Men visiting Manhunt are automatically tagged as gay. Manhunt is calling its new advertising offshoot Gay Audience. Its website states its purpose: to allow advertisers to reach gay men beyond websites offering gay-related content. The company boasts that an ad agency can reach men when they’re visiting a mainstream website such as Huffington Post using a retargeting technology called "audience extension." The 2012 Berkeley Privacy Census revealed that tracking consumers across the Web is increasing dramatically. Of the 25K most popular websites in the study, almost 90% dropped cookies. THE SCOTSMAN - July 24 - Cupid has bought French peer Assistance Genie Logiciel (AGL) from private equity fund Financiere PES for €3.7M (L2.9M). AGL’s 25 staff in Paris run three websites, two of which – Amour.com and SeRencontrer.com – follow traditional models, while the third, Ulla.com, is “somewhat racier”, analysts said.
