OKCupid’s Founder Digs Into Data On Daters

INTERNET RETAILER - June 10 - Observers can tell a lot about a person from their online dating profile, Sam Yagan, co-founder and CEO of OKCupid told attendees this week at the Internet Retailer 2012 Conference and Exhibition. “Our brand was built on our data,” Yagan said. OKCupid has demographic, psychographic, lifestyle and consumption data. That’s why a large, unnamed retailer contacted OKCupid to try and learn more about its customers, Yagan said. Retailers can use OKCupid’s model to determine what a shopper wants, not, however, by what she says she wants, but by her actions. Older women, he said, are more positive and have more self-confidence. They also enjoy sex more and are interested in casual sex more than younger women. Women who like the taste of beer are more willing to have sex on the first date.

eHarmony Confirms Password Breach

COMPUTER WORLD - June 7 - Password hashes for eHarmony were released on the same Russian forum which published the LinkedIn hashes. "After investigating reports of compromised passwords, we have found that a small fraction of our user base has been affected," wrote Becky Teraoka, of eHarmony's corporate communications. eHarmony's 1.5M password hashes were released in a forum of a Russian password-cracking website called InsidePro.

Flikdate: First Mobile Live Video Dating Service

TECH CRUNCH - May 31 - Flikdate for iOS is all about live video calls, making it feels more like a mix of Chatroulette and Match.com than the current crop of video dating services. Users sign up with Facebook login, tell the service if they want to chat with men or women, and after that, it just takes one click to get started. The service works over 3G and WiFi. By default, every conversation is limited to 90 seconds and costs one flik. If they want to talk for longer, they can go on a virtual “date” for 5 fliks.

Romance Is Big Business At IAC

INVESTORS BUSINESS DAILY - June 5 - In last year's third quarter, Match.com bought a 20% interest in Chinese dating site Zhenai and upped its stake in Europe's No. 1 dating site, Meetic, to 81%. IAC's core personals business, which includes Match.com, Chemistry.com and the People Media unit's targeted dating sites, grew sales 17% to $108.9M, driven by a 12% boost in paid subscribers to 1.8M. IAC's online personals segment is its most profitable business. This month, Match.com will start to roll out the Stir, a service that brings single people together in organized local events. As a part of an ongoing beta test, Match.com has organized 60 Stir events across 10 U.S. markets.
