IAC/Interactive, Barry Diller Pursue Online Dates

INVESTOR.COM - Dec 8 - The company's acquisition in May of Europe's Meetic.com, and its purchase of a 20% stake in China's Zhenai in September, are the latest confirmations that IAC and Diller covet online dating. For Meetic, IAC spent 15 Eur ($21), a share to boost its ownership to 80% from 27%. The shares, traded on the Euronext Paris exchange, were valued at 13.50 at the time, so IAC paid a 56% premium. IAC's dating sites are among its most profitable assets, says Needham & Co. analyst Kerry Rice. In the Q3, IAC reported that its online dating revenue rose 25% to $132.3M.

Cupid Is Aiming His Arrow At Jewish Online Dating

HAARETZ - Dec 7 - Three new Jewish dating websites have been set up in the U.S. over the past two months, and ten more are slated to launch in the coming year, as part of a Chabad network that hopes to one day go global. JDallas.org, JBoston.org, and JMiami.org were launched in their respective cities, following the success of Rabbi Yisroel Bernath’s JMontreal.com.

Hornet: Gay App On The Buzz

TIME OUT - Dec 7 - A new dating app is hitting the LGBT scene. Developed in Hong Kong and San Francisco, Hornet operates much like Grindr. Setting up a Hornet account requires users to state their HIV status. If you choose ‘negative’, the app requests the date of your last doctor’s visit. Hornet will then send you a reminder when it’s time for your next HIV testing. Hornet is still in its beta phase – it’s slow, it crashes and chats aren’t uploaded properly. But it does have a lot of potential and provides interesting features that rivals lack.

BeautifulPeople.com Thrown Off eBay For Auctioning Date With The Virgin Mary

TELEGRAPH.CO.UK - Dec 7 - BeautifulPeople.com encouraged men to bid for a date with blonde Heather Seychelle, 25, shown dressed in a "sexy" Mary outfit. Miss Seychelle appears in the dating site's nativity scene and attracted hordes of male fans. Controllers at eBay pulled the listing – complaining it contained "adult content". Greg Hodge, managing director of the site, said: "eBay accused us of posting adult content onto their website – but we simply uploaded portrait photos of our nativity stars as they appear on our home page in the hope we'd raise money for charity.

Will Controversial Regulation Prevent Dating Abuse?

IB TIMES - Dec 7 - Horrifying tales of dating abuse prompt governments across the world to introduce controversial regulations which mandate criminal background checks for every user signing up with dating agencies. "State regulation is important in order to protect individuals from scammers and criminals", said the founders of Personal Dating Agent (PDA) Alexandre Errera and Maxime Leufroy-Murat. "Although we can perform background checks on our clients, but we cannot do the same for their dates," the duo said. In the U.K. there are signs of a Clare's Law being introduced in the near future that will grant women access to the criminal history to new partners in order to allow women to know if a partner be violent or abusive.

How Badoo Got 130 Million People And $100M In Revenue

TECH CRUNCH - Dec 6 - Badoo has recently reached 130M registered users and now brings in $100M a year. Badoo would be the 4th biggest social network if it was just a social network. But Badoo adapts to the local needs of its international user base. In the UK it’s used for casual dating, in the Czech Republic it’s a marriage site, and in Indonesia burqa-clad women find self-expression on the site. While it can be tempting to gate some crucial features behind a pay wall, Badoo decided to make all of its core functionality free. While it was growing to a scale where it could support itself, Badoo took $30M in funding. Now it doesn’t need to take additional funding rounds. To reach its $100M in yearly revenues, though, Badoo lets users pay to be more visible and learn who they should try to start a conversation with.

There's No Love Lost For Online Date Frauds

SYDNEY MORNING HERALD - Dec 6 - 1600 Australians reported losing $17M in the online search for romance this year, up from $15M last year. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is asking the online dating and romance industry to comment on draft guidelines for cleaning up the industry. A group of industry representatives has been working on draft guidelines since July. The ACCC would like dating agencies to provide clients with warnings about scams, and verify online profiles to ''detect and disrupt the activities of those seeking to engage in fraud''. It also wants dating agencies to set up internal complaint handling procedures. The ACCC expects to launch new guidelines early in the new year.
