Post subject: A SECOND BIG BUBBLE
PostPosted: Wed Oct 27, 2004 11:38 pm
I think that now on line dating and social networking is in a SECOND BIG BUBBLE, that will explode soon. Some problems begin to appear in many sites that conversion rate from users to clients is decreasing because the database is full of rubbish, ads, persons that tell lies or not exist, persons that use retouched or fake photos, etc. (LOW RELIABILITY)
The strategy to give free memberships to have a good amount of users and then try to convert them in clients will not work any more, because they remain as users for ever and ever.

The FUTURE will be offering high reliability and high precision in on line dating techniques, creating demand of the service with LESS SPEED, LESS photos, LESS videos, LESS instant messaging. ONLY HIGH RELIABILITY.

A new niche market :
- persons that have been hurt in their feelings by others in many on line dating sites. Many people COMPLAINT ABOUT AN IMPORTANT THING: SOONER OR LATER, they want to contact COMPATIBLE REAL PERSONS, so they will need reliability / high precision in on line dating.
- persons that are SEARCHING for a multicultural on line dating. (e.g. a German person living in Germany and compatible with a Brazilian person who speaks Portuguese and lives in Australia)
- persons that have time to wait. (perhaps as long as a whole year, or more).

And all of them have the same reason to pay a fee:
This fee will work as a barrier to avoid free users, who could hurt their feelings.

I don't see online dating as a bubble. It will morph and change....most likely from the internet to mobile applications over much time.

The phenomena will not go away. There are certain 'killer apps' and other web phenomena that have not gone away. This message board is one of them. Message boards have been around since the beginning of the net. They still serve a role.

With regard to niche dating.....I agree there is a market for it, however, you are looking at a smaller audience. The owners of a new site, http://www.boatdating.com are coming to Miami's conference. Their niche is people who are single and own or sail on boats (share a common interest). Their market is far smaller than Match.com's or JDate, or ChristianCafe.com

Lastly.....the growth for this industry is NOT in the USA. It is in Europe and Asia. Either the online dating firms in this business get that fact in their heads and start looking at those markets, or they will compete for market share in the USA for less revenue.

I agree with the comments about the need for higher quality of accounts on a site. On our sites we are taking measures to ensure higher quality such as

1. auto-setting accounts to private (not viewable in searches) ones that have not logged in in a certain amount of time

2. privat setting accounts with no pictures so all searches return results with pictures only

3. ordering results by someones recent activity levels

...and other measures

yorktown said the best growth areas are in Europe and Asia. I don't have the evidence on this either way, but anywhere in the world where technology is growing, the liklihood of e-commerce and comfortability of socializing online automatically grows.

However, global sites can reach these markets to a degree - unless translation of sites is required. My sites are available anywhere in the world, and will soon have translations, but people often want a site focused on their country, especially in such an isolated country as Japan.
